Over the years we have seen many good, bad and indifferent coffee shops and cafes and far be it from us to offer any magical formula for success but we have seen some common themes among the more successful;
- Quality Food & Drink: Seems obvious but surprising how many people drop the ball on this one. Probably number 1 is the coffee, get this right and they will keep coming back. Good breads, fresh ingredients and a little innovation should mean a satisfied customer every time. Of course you need a good range of quality soft drinks also, don’t be afraid to go a little off-piste with your brands.
- Ambiance: Now we are in the realms of black magic and witchcraft. Successful shops can be a million miles apart in terms of layout, colour schemes, themes but something that seems to run through is that the space has something of the proprietor’s personality. It somehow reflects their values and this makes it unique and therefore special. By all means take good ideas from elsewhere but “cut and paste” is probably not a great strategy.
- People: “You wanna be where everybody knows your name” was the promise of Bostons’ Cheers. This may be a tall order but we all appreciate coffee shop staff who offer a friendly greeting and genuine warm interactions. Getting this right is probably a combination of recruitment, training and dare we say, instinct.
